Effective Ways of Beating Summer Heat

If summer season is synonymous with ice creams and mangoes, then it also reminds of various health problems. Those who take adequate care of themselves, enjoy the season to the hilt. But, those who fall prey of scorching heat have to bear serious consequences. Firstly, let's figure out some of the common health concerns of summer season.

Dehydration:It is a common condition which implies excess loss of fluid from the body. Although, the condition is easily treatable, may lead to life-threatening results if left untreated. Some of the common symptoms of the condition are dry mouth, increased thirst, headache, fatigue, etc.

Heat Stroke: Sometimes, it happens that the body temperature increases abnormally due to excessive exposure to sun for quite a long time. High body temperature, hot and dry skin, headache, no sweating, rapid heartbeat, etc. are some of the symptoms of the condition. Because it develops rapidly, hence demands immediate medical attention.

Eye Damage: Eye damage is caused due to overexposure of UV rays. A person commonly experiences redness, blurred vision, eye irritation, etc. if he suffers from eye damage.

Skin Damage: Sun burn, extreme dryness, pigmentation, tanning, etc. are some of the common skin problems which are faced during summer season.

Anyone can enjoy the warmth of sun, if adequate care is taken in the season. And for that, it is pertinent to introduce some changes in eating habits and lifestyle. Some of the measures that can help a person to safeguard himself from the common health problems are:

  • Increase fluid intake up to 12-14 glasses of water in a day. Incorporate several kinds of liquids in daily diet like lemon water, fruit juices, buttermilk, soups, lassi, etc.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine in summer season.

  • Protection from the sun is the most important and this can be done by wearing sun glasses, hats or using umbrellas. The eyes become dry very frequently during the summer. This can be prevented or minimized by using lubricating eye drops or washing eyes with cold water on a frequent basis.
  • Apply sunscreen lotion of SPF minimum 20 at least 20 minutes before stepping out in the sun. If possible, stay indoors.
  • Include a lot of raw vegetables and fruits in a diet. Binge on fruits like pineapple, pears, grapefruit and watermelon. Reason being, they have cooling effect and high water content.
  • Due to sweating, important nutrients wash out from the body. And only drinking plain water cannot solve the purpose. Therefore, it is important to regain the nutrients by drinking curd, lemon juices along with plain water.

Some other ways that help in remaining cool in this summer are:

  • Avoid wearing skin tight clothes, instead wear light color and free size clothes made from cotton.
  • Eat such fruits that contain high content of water like watermelon, cucumber, grapes, etc.
  • Avoid eating oily and spicy food as they take long time to get digested. Substitute these heavy meals with salads made from cucumber, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

  • Take bath two times in a day to keep yourself cool. Mix rose water in it as the rose water and other essential oils helps in soothing the body.

A Final Takeaway Tip: Remain cool in summer by drinking lots amount of water, eating citrus fruits and avoid taking fried food. If you are stepping out in the sun, wear sunglasses and sunscreen.

  1. Liked all your tips, Neha. It's so true that we need to drink more than just water to stay hydrated. As a South Indian, I remember we always had a lot of lemon juice and yummy buttermilk as part of summer vacations. When guests came, we always asked what they'd prefer - lemon juice or buttermilk. Also, in our tiffins, we carried lemon rice or curd rice at the peak of summer. It always helped to cool the system.
